Well, no iBook this weekend. Apparently, the order is en route from Apple, and a bit behind. Since I actually have plenty of computers, it’s not like I’ll wither away without it. But …. I want it . At least I was able to pick up my Vir Unis CDs today, and have listened to one so far – Aeonian Glow . Extremely enjoyable ambient muzak. My new messenger bag arrived – a bright freaking yellow Issaries one, to match the yellow iBuddy laptop that goes in it, and the bright freaking yellow Xterra I drive ‘em around it. Oh, and John? Stop reading my Blog!! :P

Arrrgh! What a night. First trouble getting Blogger to synch with my (useless) Netcom site, then the DSL goes out (again). Half-and-hour with tech support and they might – might – have the problem fixed by tomorrow. This is after almost two months of nightly down-time. Always connected internet – yea, right. Well, on the plus side, at least, my Vir Unis CDs arrived at MBE today. I’ll pick ‘em up Friday – along with, hopefully, my new Yellow Dog iBook.

It amazes me how used to a routine I am. John’s down with some virus/strep-type thing, which cancels the usual morning coffee-book browsing-talk about whatever happens to be in the news Saturday kickback. My first thought is ?hell…now what do I do.? And to think, I used to be spontaneous…Obviously, I’ve recovered well enough.

…and found just a great quote from Samuel Adams while flipping through this month’s Linux Journal magazine. Since I can’t very well link to hardcopy, I’ll post it here…

“If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”

Sam Adams was a bit out there, eh? Aaahhh… the heady days of the American Revolutionary War. Still, a great sentiment. Of course, I work for a living, so I suppose there’s a shade of hypocracy there… I’ll worry about that later, though. Right now, I need to enjoy the be-u-tiful day out here in Northern California, and then plan some hot death and destruction for the D&D game tomorrow.

A dog is born; a yellow dog. Well, something like that. After grousing over when and where my iMac will or won’t finally crap out, I take the near brush with loss (from the fire) to heart and order even more material possessions. Some Taoist I turned out to be.. In any event, the fine folks at Terra Soft Solutions in Colorado are configuring my custom iBook with Yellow Dog Linux and Mac OS X (Jaguar). With any luck, I’ll have it in about a week and a half.

And let’s not talk about whether I ?need? it. Need has so little to do with it… Sheeesh, I really have gone over to the Dark Side.

Thar’s fire in them thar hills!! Unfortunately, it’s a big grassfire, and it’s in my hills. After being informed of it (because I was working and not surfing the web on company time), I race home. Yep, it’s my neighborhood; hell, it’s practically my backyard!! The whole area is blocked off. After waiting around for about an hour, we’re allowed to walk up. Several hours later, we can bring out cars back too.

Luckily, the combined Fire Depts. got the blaze (a 5-alarm) under control quickly, and there was no damage to homes or people. Something in the scale of 5-10 acres burned out, and lots of sweating about the wind picking up. Several hundred yards and a strong breeze, and I would have had a total loss. Mostly clothes, the library and my various computers and electronics ? nothing irreplacable. Had I gotten a cat, like I’ve been thinking about, I would have no doubt been a wreck…
