Well, well. This has been a productive weekend so far. I got some new e-mail hosting straightened out, puzzled together some IMAP, then managed to get my new PHP forums installed and running for the Jade Lantern. Hopefully, that means I’ll be able to get some comments features added to the blog as well. Definitely a learning weekend. And I got my bills paid too. Hey, there’s an all around success, eh?

The G5, that is. Apparently, Apple’s reporting that the front and back grates of their new faster than the devil on a crack bend G5 are about 35% air. Yes, yes – I’m aware that everyone already knows about the G5. Go ogle it again anyway. I made the mistake of trying on some hi end headphones (Boise – $299) yesterday, damnit. Given I’m lately listening to music off the Powerbook (or working on my own technojunk music) I’ve been using headphones quite a bit. And while my curreny Sony’s work adequately… We’ll see… there’s something about buying $300 headphones that disturbs me. Where does it end?

Work continues on just cleaning and modernizing the House of the Jade Lantern. It’s not the largest site on the web, but it’s been up for a good while. At least since 1998, and I suspect a little earlier than that, putting it at something like 6 years in continuous availibilty (although it doesn’t get nearly the updates as it used to). Going through a long standing site and trying to retrofit the pages and clean the structure is a challenge. I suppose I should just clone the site, and work it until I’m ready. Yea, it’s archived just in case – I’m not that lazy. I’ve been fitting the pages with simple external CSS, and going back in and cleaning out old font tags, restructuring tables, strengthening the design, and the like. I’m still amazed by the amount of old, redundant and just weird code that’s embedded into the pages. It’s also a bit tedious, going through each page and working on the code. Still, it is rewarding.

Well, it seems I now get the whole referrers thing. Sometimes, I surf my own links out of pure laziness rather than using my bookmarks. So, I’m looking over the Referrers over at The Daring Fireball, and I see my blog. Hmmm, I wonder who’s…. doh ! Sheeeesh. Anyway, I do suggest The Daring Fireball for excellent Mac (and IT) reading. John has a strong writing voice, and some of the pieces he’s done are just outstanding – such as his “Flipping the Bird” commentary about crappy reporting and linux. “Independent Days” on the subject of indie web design is another great read. And I’ve added a link to WWDN – it occurs to me that maybe someone isn’t reading about Uncle Willy’s day – and that’s not good.

Well, it’s been an unusual Monday, and that’s all I’ll say about it at this time. The weekend was fun, with catching up with friends and doing the birthday movie marathon at Chris’ place. Interestingly enough, Star Trek II holds up very well as a movie; Terminator shows it’s age, however. Before movie day, I met Bernard at the local coffeeshop. Now, I had never met Bernard before, and wandered into meeting him in a fairly odd sort of way…. let’s start the evening before, on Friday night… continue reading…
