Boo-yah! I’m on vacation until the 6th. Tonight, I’m going to stay up too late. Tomorrow, I’m going to get up late, drink too much coffee, write, and lazy about. With any luck, on the 1st I’ll get up earler, and head out on a photo safari. And Monday… MacWorld!!

But, back to tomorrow. I picked up Neal Stephenson’s “In the Beginning … was the Command Line”. 151 pages. Think I’ll cruise through it over coffee tomorrow am. No, really. :D

A review over at Gamegrene, on the new D&D plastic minis caught my eye. The article’s focused on the review, of course, and minis, but it made me think of homegrown rpg stuff vs. store bought campaigns.

What I’ll tell you it that for me, home-grown is always better than store-bought. Heh. But seriously, the feedback I get is that my home-grown campaigns and variety games are far better than published stuff. Modest me, or perhaps it’s just more a case of writing for a smaller audience.

Then again, the store bought stuff can be quite convenient, and good as well.

According to the posting at Slashdot, Benjamin Reed has just compiled Konqueror for OS X after porting the KUniqueApplication class … According to Reed’s blog, ‘next up is KOffice.’ Ha! You hear that, John! Hah!

Oh yea, and if you look at the screenshot of Konqueror in action, give a gander down to the dock. Sixth icon from the left. Neverwinter Nights. Hah!

Ok, some random thoughts. Regarding the case of US Mad Cow disease – of course every country’s going to ban our beef. Isn’t that what we did to them? Payback = bitch, no?

Second – I don’t think I have the proper bag for my full kit. No really. Not withstanding the whole messenger bag madness episode aside, I realized this past week that my gear doesn’t easily fit into any of my bags. Doesn’t fit well. Nope. continue reading…

… or more like “lost in code for the holidays”. Sheeesh. Spent much of the holidays with my feet up, doing a whole lot of relaxing. And a whole lot of eating of course (burp!). Aside from that, I spent a very large amount of time sleeping, and more to the point reading and coding. Or reading and drifting on a sea of code. I hacked out a few simple unix shell scripts, (re)read several hundred pages of Unix for Mac OS X, a few other chapters, several magazines, and worked with php-Nuke, php-PostNuke, and a variety of other content management systems. I finally installed b2, and then promptly upgraded it to Wordpress. So far, it’s very nice. I like some of its capabilities – such as blog by email and phone. On the other hand, I like pMachine’s admin of posts much better.

Right now, I’m using Wordpress for the draft experiment of the new House of the Jade Lantern site. Something a little less bloated and “pre-2000″ – something a little more intimate in a way. The essense of the site. We’ll see.

Oh yes, I also got in a bunch of writing, including several topics for a bi-weekly column that I’m pitching for publication (more on that later, when I’ve heard back definitively). Also had some crazy ideas for a Mac/Linux-based smart house and security system from afternoon discussion with Adam. All in all, a relaxing, odd, geeky holiday vacation. Tomorrow morning, I’m back in the office for two – count ‘em two – days until I’m off again until the 6th of January.
